A French academic research laboratory has patented a new predictive and prognostic breast cancer biomarker. This new tool will help doctors to choose the right treatment. Industrial partners for licence agreement are sought.

At the age of personalized medicine, systematic use of biomarkers will allow breast cancer patients to get the best treatment or even a tailored treatment. Some well-validated and well-established biomarkers as oestrogen (ER), progesteron (PR) and HER receptors play a key role in the treatment choice. However, traditional use of these biomarkers as decision therapeutic tool leads to overtreat breast cancers.
The French academic research laboratory has developed a new prognosis and predictive biomarker of recurrent, invasive and metastasis phenotypes in breast cancer.
First, the research laboratory has identified a gene which overexpression in vitro and in vivo is associated with an aggressive and invasive phenotype in breast cancer cells. High expression levels of this marker are correlated with likelihood of metastasis and relapse/recurrence of the cancer.
Then, the laboratory has set up a method to measure expression of this biomarker in samples from patients presenting already a “good prognosis” diagnosis, established by currently used biomarkers (ER, PR, HER2, Ki67, and SBR).
As a result, this biomarker is a powerful tool for identifying and re-stratifying patients with aggressive breast tumors, having a poor prognosis for relapse-free survival or for overall survival.
